Renault Mégane E-Tech

Renault is electrifying the popular Mégane range, by unveiling the new Renault Mégane E-Tech. This is a prime example of the continuous improvements made, since the conception of the electric vehicle.

The Mégane steers towards the new age

Visually too, the Mégane E-Tech is a real head-turner, due to a curvy and distinctively modern design that sets it apart from its competitors in the “compact class”. As a means of achieving the rather important detail of “optimum aerodynamics” when conceptualizing an electric car, Renault has focused on a curved and streamlined design. The entire car´s shape is rounded off with continuous rear lights, which give the Mégane E-Tech an even more futuristic look. The spirited “Iconic” tested by us, is the version of the Mégane, which makes quite an impression.

For one, it comes equipped with 20-inch alloy wheels and a front skirt branding with golden chrome accents. As an option, the front skirt can also be finished in body colour, for those who find the two-tone paint finish less appealing.

Thanks to a 60-kWh battery and efficient drive system, the Mégane E-Tech achieves a range of up to 450 km (WLTP), according to the manufacturer. Combined with the above-average interior space, it is ideally suited for everyday use. But more on that later.

Modern interior and innovative technology

The interior of the Mégane E-Tech looks equally appealing and modern. It features a welcoming ambience with a high-quality design. This is enhanced exponentially, by the optional leather upholstery in "Noire Titane", including a leather steering wheel.

The concept of space, in the Mégane E-Tech has been revolutionised, compared to the previous model, as the conventional centre console has been omitted. In short, this means more legroom and all the more generous space to be had. The battery pack is located at the front of the car, which allows for a larger boot, up to 440 litres in the Mégane E-Tech.

Hard to miss is the large touchscreen infotainment system, fitted as standard. Renault uses Google, and leaves the infotainment software to the experts, giving the driver access to the best Google functions available. Google Maps and Google Play Store, to download apps quickly and effortlessly, are all readily available at your fingertips. The driver also has access to its voice control, provided by Google Assistant. This works flawlessly - destinations can be easily dictated and activated via voice control. For the optimal sound experience, a Harmann/Kardon ® sound system can be ordered as an option.

The Mégane E-Tech doesn't skimp on safety features either. In addition to a 360-degree camera, it has a blind spot, and lane departure warning system, making for a safer driving experience.

The only drawback is the reduced visibility through its small rear window. However, numerous cameras make up for this short coming to provide extra driving assistance. One of a number of features is the digital rear-view mirror, a revised camera image, projected onto the rear-view, itself. This requires some getting used to, but works surprisingly well.

Comfortable driving experience with a touch of sportiness

Renault placed particular focus on the comfort aspect of the Mégane E-Tech. It therefore offers a well-tuned chassis and a suspension that provides a smooth and comfortable driving experience.

At the same time, the Mégane E-Tech is also capable of some sporty handling.

In a snappy 7.4 seconds, the front-wheel drive accelerates to 100 km/h, providing up to 300 Nm of torque. Two electric motors produce 220 hp or 160 kW. The steering could be a little more precise, but however, feels unspirited, especially on winding roads.

Nevertheless, thanks to its good handling, the Renault Mégane E-Tech basically feels safe and confident when on the go.

A 60-kWh battery and an efficient drive system allow up to 450 km of range, this highlights the everyday usability of the Mégane E-Tech. According to the manufacturer, average consumption is an acceptable 17.3 kWh/100 km. To charge the battery of this French sedan from 0 - 80% it takes about 40 minutes at a maximum charging power of 130 kW.

In addition, the Renault Mégane E-Tech has several driving modes that allow for a tailored driving experience. Adaptable ambient lighting options are available for your personalised driving mode.

The base model can be purchased for as little as CHF 40`000. The Mégane E-Tech "Iconic" version, we tested, starts at 46`000 CHF, mainly due to the already mentioned upgrades such as the two-tone paint or the leather interior.

Another sure drive towards the sustainable future

Renault's experience in the electric car segment is clearly evident in the Mégane E-Tech. Its smaller sister, the Renault Zoe, proved to be a bestseller in many European countries. So with the popularity of the Mégane series, it´s definitely worth mentioning, that they are taking a step positive towards a sustainable future. The new Mégane is built on a proprietary platform (CMF-EV), which they share with the Nissan brand. This was created specifically for the development of electric cars. There are already several other electric cars in the pipeline.

Final thoughts:

In summary, the Renault Mégane E-Tech offers not only a modern and aerodynamic look, but also a spacious and impressive high-quality interior, with modern technology included.

Easy-to-use Google infotainment software, a Harmann/Kardon ® sound system and numerous safety features, complete the overall package.

With a good range and its relatively low consumption, it is ideally suited for everyday use. The Mégane E-Tech is a prime example of what successful a “compact class” can look like.
