The smart #1 Brabus marks a significant turning point in the history of smart. With the launch of the model #1, the manufacturer enters the compact SUV segment for the first time. However, the smart #1 not only embodies the first compact SUV in the model range, but also impresses with a combination of performance, style and sustainability.
From a city car to a futuristic compact SUV
The smart #1 Brabus convinces with its cuddly design and offers a fresh and futuristic look. This shows that smart has evolved and is ready to conquer new market segments. The manufacturer was previously known best for its traditionally small city cars. But smart has grown up: with a length of 4.27 metres, the #1 is no longer a small car. Nevertheless, the shape remains compact and therefore still suits well for urban traffic. Frameless windscreens and retractable door handles make the shape of the mart #1 look as if it has been cast from a single mould. With a range of over 400 kilometres, it is also suitable for slightly longer distances.
Compared to the standard model, the smart #1 Brabus has a sportier look and has also been equipped with a few extras from Brabus. There are Brabus badges all over the vehicle, for example on the rear of the car. Some design elements in the interior of the Brabus version also differ from the standard version. But more on that later.
The smart #1 Brabus is also equipped with an even more powerful battery, which enables a system output of 428 hp.
Innovative technology with a Brabus touch
The smart #1 is at the forefront of technology and interior design in particular. The centrepiece of the cockpit is a 12.8-inch touchscreen, which can be used to operate numerous vehicle functions. This is complemented by a head-up display and another small display behind the steering wheel for speed, range and other displays. The telephone answering system, on-board computer and volume control can also be easily operated via buttons on the steering wheel. The interior of the smart #1 has a clean, modern look and is not overloaded with unnecessary buttons. There is also first-class ambient lighting with a choice of over 60 different colours. These colours change depending on the driving mode selected and give the smart #1 an even more personalised character.
In general, the infotainment system of the smart #1 offers numerous functions. Our personal highlight: an avatar in the shape of a fox. This ‘intelligent companion’ assists the driver via voice control, for example when setting destinations in the navigation system. What is particularly interesting about this is that, according to Smart, this avatar is constantly learning via artificial intelligence.
For music lovers, the smart #1 Brabus offers a first-class sound experience thanks to
the 13-speaker Beats Audio sound system.
But now to the special Brabus details. A very prominent ‘B’ for Brabus adorns the Alcantara leather seats. Furthermore, the brand-typical ‘Brabus’ lettering can also be found in various places in the interior.
Compact SUV with rocket power
The Brabus version of the smart #1 has 428 hp / 315 kW. A real rocket! Remarkable acceleration catapults the #1 Brabus from 0-100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds. You wouldn't expect this from a compact SUV of this size at its first glance.
The stable driving behaviour on winding roads is also worth mentioning. The vehicle's low centre of gravity ensures good grip and stability. Definitely the sportiest smart that the subsidiary brand of Mercedes and Geely has ever produced.
With a range of 400 kilometres and a battery capacity of 66 kWh, the smart #1 Brabus is in the middle of the field in direct comparison with the competition. This is probably also due to the fact that the #1 Brabus is equipped with all-wheel drive and therefore weighs a little more. Its energy consumption is 18.2 kWh/100 km.
Fair price
The Brabus version of the smart #1 is available from 45’000 CHF. In view of its extensive equipment and high performance, this is good value for money. On the current market, you can find e-car alternatives that offer more range at a similar price, for example. But hardly with the same driving pleasure as the #1 Brabus.
Final thoughts:
The smart #1 Brabus marks a new era for the brand. It combines sportiness, modern technology and an appealing design. Thanks to its ideal size and a range of 400 kilometres, it is well suited for both urban and rural traffic. In short, the smart #1 Brabus represents a successful reorientation of the brand, which strongly realises the philosophy of a compact SUV.
