Cupra Born e-Boost

Seat's subsidiary brand Cupra, is launching its first all-electric vehicle, the model Born. Cupra announced this vehicle as a complete game-changer.

It is supposed to be "environmentally conscious and at the same time dynamic, as well as exciting". Our report will show whether the Born lives up to this concept.

The Game Changer from Spain

One thing is clear: with its modern and sporty appearance, the Born catches the eye right from the start. A typical Cupra feature is the characteristic and standard copper-coloured Cupra emblem.

It is an ideal embodiment of electrified sportiness and attention to detail, which on a technical level is closely related to the VW ID. 3.

However, the Cupra Born offers a significantly sportier driving experience and a much more stylish appearance.

Starting at a base price of just 42´000 CHF, the Cupra offers a range of 424 kilometres and a crisp 204 hp.

Incidentally, Cupra's first all-electric model was named after a specifically trendy neighbourhood in the middle of Barcelona.

Modern Interior with a Focus on Sustainability

The new design is evident in the interior: a large, seemingly floating touchscreen - instead of many buttons and levers - offers a perfect overview of all information. Also included are the stylish copper-coloured accents, which are typical for the Cupra brand. A personal highlight in the interior is the sporty Cupra steering wheel, which also has a copper-coloured button to activate the so-called "e-Boost", but more on that later.

In general, everything in the Born is focused around the person behind the wheel. Via the latest infotainment system, the driver can access many online services and apps at any time, or call up various safety and service functions. For an even better driving experience, an augmented reality head-up display projects important information such as speed or minimum distance to the vehicle in front onto the windscreen.

The compact size of the Cupra Born raises doubts about the available interior space. But once you take a seat on the spacious rear bench, you quickly realise that the Cupra Born also offers enough comfort for all passengers.

Especially in the interior of the Cupra, the focus was placed on the use of environmentally friendly materials. The optional bucket seats, for example, are made of Dinamica®, a microfiber made from recycled materials. Those who opt for these bucket seats can benefit from electric seat heating and a massage function integrated into the seat. For an even better feeling of space, the Cupra Born can also be equipped with a panoramic glass roof.

Sporty Character Makes for an Exciting Driving Experience

The model we tested achieves a range of up to 424 km (WLTP) with a battery capacity of 58 kWh. However, if these values are not enough, you can also opt for a 77-kWh battery, which even enables a range of up to 548 km (WLTP). Such a good value is mainly due to its extremely aerodynamic shape and the standard 204 hp or 150 kW rear-wheel drive.

The Born manages to sprint from 0-100 km/h in a brisk 6.6 seconds and provides 310 Nm of torque.

The Cupra Born's Drive Profile allows the driver to choose between five different driving modes at any time.

These include, for example, the "Range" driving mode, which is designed to achieve the highest possible range, or the "Comfort" driving mode, in which the dampers and steering are adjusted to produce even more comfortable driving behaviour.

But the CUPRA mode is particularly worth mentioning. This is automatically added with the e-Boost package. The CUPRA mode can be activated via the extremely conspicuous button on the steering wheel. This briefly increases the maximum performance to 231 hp (170 kW) and thus ensures even more emotion and dynamism when driving.

Basically, the Cupra Born is convincing with a dynamic but at the same time pleasant driving behaviour. Even on difficult roads, it proves to be quite agile and offers a captivating driving experience.

Further E-Models Already Announced

The Cupra Born is the first fully electric model from the Spanish brand and, thanks to its sustainable materials, it is also extremely environmentally friendly. Cupra has already announced two more all-electric models to be launched in the coming years. In this way, Cupra is making an important contribution to reducing CO2 emissions and meeting European climate targets.

Final thoughts:

The Cupra Born certainly lives up to the term "Game Changer". Not only does it impress visually with its sporty design, but it also scores points with a captivating driving experience. It proves to be a refined, high-quality and at the same time extremely environmentally friendly electric car, a good embodiment of electrified sportiness with sufficient range.
